17 premieres at the Shimmy Shake Festival 2016!
In the Shimmy Shake Festival 2016 you can see 3 different shows with a total of 37 dance acts featuring 104 dancers! There are 15 workshops for all different levels, a lively market with café, a panel discussion, various meetings and dinner with the stars.
Seventeen of the 37 dance acts are Dutch premieres, 10 of which are works made specially for this festival! Kami Liddle, a top performer from the USA, has made 2 new works for us and closer to home Tjarda van Straten has also just created 2 new works – a duet with Nadija Broekhart and a new work for her company Amano. ’Muses’ the company of Nadiya Natali will perform a specially made new piece, as will TribAlways, Janneke Staat and Asrais. Also you can see the results of two new projects we set up for this festival – Hip Hop meets Tribal which we made with Holy Pie, Stephanie Bijker and the dancers of Future In Dance coached by director Indira Tauwenaar and Tribal Improvisation to live music with Sunolia the trio of Alex Vansalen and dancers Vleer, Jolin Calle en Dayenne Dijkland.
As well as works made specially for the festival there are also seven dance acts that will be performing for the first time in Holland – Dutch premieres! We will see two of the newest performances of Hilde Cannoodt (UK), Vesna Zorman with the Ambrosia group (SLO), Aziza Gizeh (BE), the Hootchie Cootchie Girls (BE), Helene Grunfeld-Smits en Adriana Sotero (POR).

A beautiful performance, a great audience
and awesome dancers!
Last Sunday the famous Flash Mob was replaced by a new experience – the Pop-Up Performance.
HipSick created a concept and choreography for the annual pop-up performance to promote the Shimmy Shake Festival in Rotterdam. Around 30 dancers performed in front of the Markthal. The rain, wind and cold couldn't stop them from giving a fabulous performance in front of hundreds onlookers. HEROINES!
Harems in the mind by Inge Schooneveld
Join our lively panel discussion!
Join our lively discussion during the Shimmy Shake Festival 2016 on that age old idea that Bellydance plays up to man’s idea of woman as sex object! Or is it so that female sensuality is our born right is and a strength that we have hesitated to embrace. Yet these days women increasingly want to explore their primal power by learning pole dance, burlesque, Bellydance. What is going on? Surrender or conquest?
Our curator Inge van Schooneveld has prepared an excellent overview of this issue referencing various sources and will discuss her point of view with Deena Ray (Burlesque dancer), Hilde Cannoodt (Tribal, ATS and Cabaret dancer) and Karen van der Knoop (Bellydancer). Join us!
